Bettie Page (1923-2008)

By Ida Tursic (Belgrade, 1974) & Wilfried Mille (Boulogne-sur-mer, 1974).

Painting on printed paper

« For us, Bettie Page is a kind of anti-Marilyn: the bad girl of the 1950s. Condemned for pornography, she went crazy and started talking to God and Satan at the same time, like in Jerome Bosch's The Temptation of Saint Anthony. Bettie Page is a Venus of the bad life, as in Édouard Manet's ».

Model and American pin-up in the 1950s, she posed nude for several magazines of the time. Interned for schizophrenia and forgotten, she was the object of a growing cult as a symbol of sexual liberation in the 1980s.
