Joni Mitchell, singer/songwriter
Friedrich Kunath uses many mediums in his productions - painting, installations, neon signs, video - and often combines text and image. He likes to explore the emotions of the human soul, from desire to loneliness, while privileging feelings of melancholy, disenchantment and vulnerability. He creates works based on real or fictitious scenarios, inhabited by lonely and unsure characters. Recycling, reference and quotation are the tools he has chosen to build an abundant iconography, drawn from various sources and placed under the influence of two poles: learned culture and popular culture, to the point of obsession.

Born in 1974 in Karl-Marx-Stadt / Chemnitz (former GDR), he lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied at the Braunschweig School of Fine Arts with Walter Dahn and has had exhibitions at the Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn (2001); Aspen Art Museum, Aspen and 55th Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2008); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2010); Schinkel Pavilion, Berlin (2011); Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2011).
